DeLong Christmas Tree Farm:
A Legacy of Tradition and Family
Nestled in the hills of Berks County, Pennsylvania, DeLong Christmas Tree Farm has been a cherished part of the community since its roots were first planted in the early 1940’s.
First Generation
Founded by Charles Aubrey DeLong, a Penn State forestry graduate, the farm began with a vision to grow high-quality Christmas trees. Charles and his wife, Mary Eve, purchased the land and an old dairy barn in 1941. By 1942, Charles had planted his first crop of Scotch Pines and converted the barn into their home.
In 1949, the farm harvested its first trees, and as demand grew, Douglas Firs became a staple. Known for their lush, dark green needles and fragrant aroma, these trees are slow growers, taking up to 14 years to mature. Over time, the farm expanded with new varieties like Blue Spruce, Concolor Fir, and Western White Pine, thanks to the efforts of Charles’ son, Tom DeLong.
Second Generation
Tom, a forestry scholar with advanced degrees from Duke University, brought scientific knowledge to the farm and helped establish its reputation for excellence. He also served in Harrisburg at the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters, earning numerous accolades for his trees, including dozens of blue ribbons from the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
Third Generation
With a legacy of success, the farm saw its next generation, Jean DeLong Custer, take the lead. Jean expanded the farm’s offerings and focused on making the farm a destination for families during the holiday season, adding a new sales barn and popular tree varieties like Fraser Firs and Canaan Firs.
After Jean’s untimely passing, Jean’s son, R.T. DeLong, who had grown up working on the farm, made the difficult decision to sell. The weight lifted when he met the Bachman family, who were committed to preserving the farm’s legacy.

and son, R.T., in the 90’s.
